The WNBA is in full swing and tonight's matchup is arguably the closest thing to a must-win in the current constellation. Las Vegas are defending champions and have lost just two of their 21 games this season. The team boasts the best players in the world and has been strengthened ahead of this season. Seattle, on the other hand, have won just four of their 20 matches. The team from the north-west of the USA is in a state of flux following the retirement of legend Sue Bird and the departure of Breanna Stewart to New York. Have the Aces won the title yet?

I can only answer the above question in theory, but at the moment I cannot see any team that can compete with the Aces. Las Vegas had four All-Stars this year, the most ever. Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Grey, A'ja Wilson, Jackie Young and Candace Parker are among the best in the world at their respective positions, and Seattle does not have the right matchups. In particular, the Plum-Wilson tandem looks unstoppable at the moment. Las Vegas have lost just two games this season, both away to Connecticut and Dallas, two of the better teams in the WNBA.

Seattle in rebuild - for how long?

Seattle is supposed to be a successful franchise, and the current rebuilding phase is probably just what the doctor ordered. Sue Bird retired before the season and Stewart, their best player, joined the New York Liberty. She was the league's MVP in 2018 and its leading scorer last year. Four wins in 20 games is simply not enough, but it would have secured her the first pick in the next draft. There was only one win in the last ten games and that came against Phoenix, who were currently the second-worst team. Jewell Lloyd, the last "good" player from the successful years, is also injured.

The roles could not be clearer. First place against 12th or 19 wins against 4 wins. These two teams have already played each other twice this season, with the Aces winning those games by 41(!!) and 33 points, respectively. The current spread is 16.5 points, which should be no problem for the Aces. The team simply has much more individual quality and is also better resourced across the board. On average, Las Vegas wins its games by 15.4 points and the quality in the WNBA is not to be underestimated, especially at the top. A clear class difference today.
