Bundesliga Tips: Werder Bremen vs. Mainz 05
Somewhat spontaneous this week, but unfortunately I did not get around to it beforehand. Werder play their second home game after the opening game and unfortunately the author of this article cannot be there. The games in September, when the weather is (hopefully) still good, are simply the highlight of the weekend. Mainz will be a grateful opponent, and the first points can finally be collected. But I will not be betting on a Werder win here, but on an over. Both teams have a chance to pick up their first three points and I expect an offensive approach.

Werder Bremen without Füllkrug on day 1
Werder shipped Niclas Füllkrug to Borussia Dortmund on Thursday in exchange for Rafael Borre on loan from Frankfurt. Füllkrug has done a lot for Werder and there are arguments to be made that he is currently Germany's best midfielder. I am curious to see how he gets going at Dortmund, I think he will quickly replace Haller. Borre is a different type of striker, who works a lot in the back and is always on the go, but I do not remember him as a scorer. At Werder, Kowanicki, who was signed from Düsseldorf in the summer, will get his chance and I think he can make a good impression against Mainz today.

Mainz held to an unlucky 1-1 draw last week
Mainz should have picked up their first three points against Frankfurt last week, but they conceded in man-advantage towards the end of the game. The important thing is that they have Onisiwo back in the side to provide more attacking threat. Both he and Ajorque were injured last week, but they still played a good game. Mainz are a team that likes to play in a three-man defence. Fact is: Werder's defence is anything other than impenetrable.

My Werder vs. Mainz prediction
Werder's defence is really not good and Freiburg should have scored 2 more goals last weekend. Werder will have to find their feet without Füllkrug, but maybe this is a chance for the other players. Mainz are also not known as a defensive power and I assume that an offensive battle will develop early on. Both teams desperately need three points before the international break, before they get into a negative spiral. I think 3 goals is very realistic here. Their last meeting ended 2-2.
