Sunday is always the day of the finals in tennis, and in addition to the ATP 250 finals in Gstaad and Bastad, the finals in Newport, USA, take place this evening. I have been watching the tournaments from the beginning, after the Wimbledon coverage in the previous weeks. On Monday I would not have bet a cent that the final would be Michelsen vs. Mannario. The Cinderella story of Alex Michelsen
The 19-year-old Michelsen is one of the newcomers on the Tour and is currently ranked 190th. The tournament in Newport is not particularly well fielded, so he qualified directly with this ranking. As a US player, it is a nice story for him to reach his first ATP final on American soil. And Michelsen can enjoy the support of the fans. He has beaten two very good grass court players in Cressy and Isner, and his place in the final is well deserved.

Adrian Mannarino - the grass expert
There is no grass in Malta, so it is surprising that Mannarino is such a strong grass player. All kidding aside, he is having an outstanding year on the surface, including a final appearance in Mallorca. He is currently ranked 32nd in the world in the live rankings. On grass, Mannarino has beaten the likes of Medvedev and Fritz this year, and his unorthodox style of play helps him on this surface. You have to know that the ball on grass is very fast and bounces flat, and Mannarino often plays the ball with a lot of spin and difficult angles. It is a difficult game for opponents to counter and he can score easy points.

I see Mannarino as the favourite in today's final. He has already played in a final this year and also has more experience - he has been on the Tour for over ten years. Michelsen's qualification for the final is a credit to him, but I also expect him to be nervous in the final. He has played on the smaller Challenger level and was not at Wimbledon. Mannarino often challenges his opponents with his "weird" style of play and Michelsen has not yet found the tools to deal with it.
