Callie Rogers’ life was not easy. When she was 16, she had worked as a salesgirl earning 5 Euro an hour. A lotto ticket and her winning (when converted) 2.5 million Euro changed everything. Money in abundance, designer clothes, parties, drugs, depressions, three breast enlargements and then everything was suddenly gone. Meanwhile she is 35 years old and is back at school.

Many dream of the old “fairy tale from a dishwasher to a millionaire” or in this case from a cashier to an “It-Girl”: Through her win Callie Rogers had attracted considerable attention in her country. As the youngest lotto millionaire, the British had enjoyed being in the limelight and had privately savoured her bonanza. Actually, she enjoyed it till the very last, because there is nothing left from the millions.

Rogers is back at school and would like to become a better person

In an interview with the British boulevard newspaper “The Sun" Callie Rogers said that she wanted to go back to school. She had already worked in the field of social services, as a carer and now wants to continue in that path. Her aim: to qualify as a nurse and to be able to care for her small family. Nowadays Rogers has four children and is a single mother. For her, enrolling for the nursing course at a university is an important step towards a new, settled life.

She says she feels very sorry, especially for her children since they missed being part of her win which was worth millions. She informed the The Daily Mail that she thinks back about her omissions, especially when she needs money for medical expenses. She would have liked to have more money available for these expenses. This honest way of thinking about herself is part of the appraisal of her longstanding problems. Callie Rogers is now convinced that time out with her family is important and that she must work on herself. She wants to become a better person. For a long time, she had been living only for herself and she had made many wrong decisions.

Rogers describes her lotto win as a “curse”

In the past Callie Rogers had often spoke in the media about her win and insisted that she saw it as a “curse”. According to her own (plausible) statement, she was too young to grasp the consequences of this event.

She squandered the money which was in her hands: she had bought houses for herself as well as for her parents and grandparents. She had not thought about the long-term costs that these houses bring with them. She spent hundreds of thousands in designer clothes and had three breast enlargements. She also showered her (alleged) friends with presents. For example, Rogers reported that one day she had met people for drinks and they had all helped themselves to her credit card. Her fellow party people had not only ordered drinks from her card but also brand new MacBooks.

The parties increased and the nights became longer. Besides alcohol, Callie Rogers was regularly into drugs. This obviously had personal and legal consequences for her. The young woman caused an accident when she was under the influence of cocaine and was then banned from driving. After an attack by two women in the apartment of her former friend, she had to be hospitalised in 2018. She suffered from broken bones. When her money finished, she lived for some time on social welfare and suffered from severe depressions.

Rogers believes the minimum age for lotto playing should be increased.

The minimum age to play lotto in the UK is 16 years. Callie Rogers believes that this has been set too low as 16 is too young. On several occasions she has spoken out in favour of increasing the age limit. When one eventually wins, at 16 years one is too young to be responsible for that large amount of money. In an interview, she said:

“At that age one can receive the best advice, but one is too young to listen to it.”

In fact, in 2021, the minimum age for participating in lotteries was increased from 16 to 18 years. It is questionable whether Callie Rogers had influenced this decision, but her opinion must have been part of it.

Conclusion

It happens very often that winners of larger lotto jackpots cannot handle their “luck”. The case of Callie Rogers seems to be one of the especially drastic examples.

The main factors of her experience occur very often: Many lotto winners who end up unhappy speak about false friends, excessive parties, and a constant downward spiral which one does not notice at first, but which ends when everything has been lost.

However, Callie Rogers’ adjustment shows courage and strength. Her new aims seem to be positive. After she collapsed, she chose the way forward and seems – even when it comes to her four children – to have every reason for following on it. She said to The Sun: The lotto win played a large part for her in becoming the person she is today – and she is proud of who she is.
