How attractive is the game portfolio in German online casinos?
The selection of games in German online casinos has grown steadily in recent months and years. The focus is still on virtual slot machines. However, online casino games such as roulette, blackjack and online poker are also permitted. But how attractive is the game portfolio in licensed online casinos at the moment?
Back in December 2023, we at GambleJoe reported on the small selection of games in German online casinos and asked ourselves why the gambling authority approves so few slots. At the time, we already criticized the fact that there is no centrally managed whitelist with the slots approved by the authority. To this day, nothing has changed in this respect, meaning that players cannot see at a glance which virtual slot machines have been approved by the German gambling authority and which have not (yet) been approved. Today, however, we would like to answer the question of how attractive the range of games on offer in German online casinos has become.
Online casinos still almost exclusively offer online slots
No matter which online casino you visit in January 2025, you won't find anything more than virtual slot machines. However, the variety of slots has increased significantly, especially in the recent past. German online casinos now offer slots from the providers Play'n GO, Pragmatic Play, Gamomat, Novomatic, Swintt, Red Time Gaming, Playson, Relax, Amatic and other developers. Many providers also offer the popular Merkur slots.
Currently, 38 companies have a license for virtual slot machines in Germany (as of January 2025). It is striking that the number of licensed companies has hardly changed over the past year. It can therefore be concluded that all interested companies have now gone through the licensing process.

In March last year, we reported that the GGL was rejecting more and more applications for slots. One of the reasons for this was the fact that in many cases the applicants had not provided a proper test environment. What many German players are missing in a German online casino are slots with a progressive jackpot function (e.g. Mega Moolah, Mega Fortune, Hall of Gods).
The fact is that the number of available online slots has increased disproportionately since the State Treaty on Gambling came into force, particularly in the last two years. A reputable online casino in Germany currently almost always offers several hundred online slots.
- In the Crazybuzzer casino, for example, there are currently 501 virtual slot games.
- In the SlotMagie casino, there are even 561 virtual slot games available.
- The selection is even larger with around 670 slots at BingBong and Jackpotpiraten.
Online casino games and other games are missing from the German providers
Unfortunately, there is still no way to play "real" casino games online anywhere in Germany. This includes roulette, blackjack and baccarat. Only in Bavaria does the State Lottery and Casino Administration offer online casino games such as Comfort Autoroulette, Classic Autoroulette, 1x2 Gaming 3D Roulette, Red7 Blackjack and Playzido Casino Blackjack.
According to the whitelist, the following companies are licensed to offer online casino games in their respective sales territories:
Company | Website | Sales territory |
---|---|---|
BluBet Operations GmbH | casino.novoline.de | Schleswig-Holstein |
Cashpoint Malta Limited | merkur-spiel.de | Schleswig-Holstein |
Skill On Net Limited | drueckglueck.com/casino | Schleswig-Holstein |
Tipico Karlsruhe Limited | sh-games.tipico.de | Schleswig-Holstein |
State lottery and casino administration | spielbanken-bayern-online.de | Bavaria |
However, some federal states, such as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, have already decided not to allow online casino games.
However, so-called arcade or crash games such as Aviator or JetX are also sought in vain in German online casinos. Back in June last year, we at GambleJoe also asked ourselves what is missing most in German online casinos with a German license.
Conclusion
In licensed online casinos, gamblers currently still have to make do with virtual slot machines. With a few exceptions, online casino games such as roulette or blackjack have not yet found their way into German online casinos. However, the selection of online slots has recently become noticeably more attractive, as almost all providers have around 500 slots on offer. Due to legal regulations, progressive jackpot slots and arcade games such as Aviator or JetX still have to be dispensed with. Whether the current range of games can therefore be described as attractive depends primarily on the preferences of the individual player.
