In the recent past, it has primarily been the up-and-coming talents who have left their mark on modern poker: with ambitious approaches, sometimes unconventional strategies and an unprecedented ease in dealing with digital possibilities. But other influences such as AI and fast poker variants also play an important role in the ongoing development of the game. A profound change is indeed on the horizon.

Poker today combines tradition and innovation in equal measure. Over the past centuries, it has established itself as one of the most popular card games in the world and yet it never stands still. The classic game is constantly being redefined by fresh ideas, groundbreaking technologies and talented newcomers.

With the start of the new year, expert forecasts and headlines predicting major upheavals are on the rise. Bild, for example, predicts "a new generation of players who will revolutionize the game". Just a few weeks ago, Bild also interviewed German WSOP player Quirin Heinz, giving us an interesting insight into the life of a poker pro. On his LinkedIn account, former poker ace Eugene Katschalow attributes high stakes games, AI-supported strategies, ultra-fast variants and streamers, among other things, with a high degree of relevance for the near future. All of this could turn the card world on its head.

The bottom line: the fusion of classic poker, fresh ways of playing and digital technologies has the potential to be the next big transformation. The scale of change could be as massive as we saw with the emergence of the first online poker platforms or after Chris Moneymaker's victory at the 2003 World Series of Poker (WSOP). These events have played a major role in transforming the game from a casino classic into a global phenomenon that fascinates millions.

But what exactly is behind this "new age of poker"? Which rising stars, trends and technologies are likely to dominate the game? We have worked our way through forecasts, expert opinions and discussions and want to use the new year 2025 to provide a summarized outlook.

New strategies, AI and community thinking are changing the scene

With extraordinary ambition and an unmistakably digital approach, a new generation of players is conquering the poker world - both online and at the tables on site.

Young talents such as Samuel Mullur and Tom Fuchs, who work closely with Germany's poker star Fedor Holz, show that poker no longer just requires discipline, experience and luck. Creativity and the bet of modern technologies such as AI-supported analysis and Game Theory Optimization (GTO) are the new keys to success. The mindset of this generation seems radically different to long-time observers of the scene - more analytical, more strategic and more willing to take risks.

In addition to the pioneering players in the German-speaking world already mentioned, there are various other young minds who have attracted positive attention in recent months.

The faces of a new era?

  • Curtis Knight: He is the rising star from the USA. Knight aptly describes the current poker boom at Bild as "the beginning of a new era". His unorthodox moves and razor-sharp analysis have taken him to the final rounds of several major tournaments in 2024.
  • Samuel Ju: The German player achieved a remarkable second place in the $40,000 Mystery Bounty at the Triton High Roller Series in Montenegro and secured prize money of €416,000.
  • Roland Rokita: The 28-year-old Austrian and former ski jumper won his first bracelet and the equivalent of almost €257,000 at the WSOP in Las Vegas. Rokita had previously won the Triton Poker Series in Jeju and collected 830,000 euros. He honed his skills at the poker school run by Fedor Holz and Matthias Eibinger, among others.
  • Vivian Saliba: The Brazilian player triumphed in the €2,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event at the WSOP Europe in Rozvadov, securing her first gold bracelet and €91,400 in prize money. The WSOP recently attracted attention with its global expansion plans, with which it would also like to increase its presence in Europe.
  • Alessandro Pichierri: The Italian won the €25,000 High Roller event at the World Series of Poker Europe in Rozvadov and set a personal record with prize money of €335,900.

Incidentally, German poker veteran Eddy Scharf decided to sell his WSOP bracelets.

Networking and technology as game changers

Today's young players are not only excellently educated, but also better connected than any generation before. They exchange strategies, analyze hands and develop new approaches via Discord, private coaching groups and Twitch channels. This open culture of knowledge transfer has permanently changed the dynamics of the game - and will continue to do so.

Technology plays a crucial role in this: AI-supported hand analysis software and GTO simulations have already raised the level of modern poker tactics to an unprecedented level.

These tools alone represent a revolution, but their use is not without controversy. As Bryn Kenney warns Bild: "Innovation is important, but we must preserve the heart of the game."

In the summer of 2024, we asked ourselves whether online casinos are at risk from AI.

Poker on the road to the future: innovation on many levels

The poker world is not only evolving at the tables - it is growing on completely new levels and exploring exciting perspectives.

A milestone that Eugene Katschalow highlights as an important achievement: in 2024, poker was officially recognized as a mental sport, joining the ranks of chess, bridge and e-sports. This upgrade underlines the strategic depth of the game and should promote its spread in regulated markets worldwide.
  1. The growth of online poker: With over 100 million active players worldwide, poker has long been a global phenomenon. According to a report by Business Research Insights, the market for online poker platforms was estimated at USD 96.2 billion in 2023 - a figure that could rise to an incredible USD 213.25 billion by 2032. Virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) technologies in particular, combined with AI, promise revolutionary gaming experiences: Virtual poker rooms where players feel like they are at real tables could soon be accessible to everyone.
  2. Fast-paced formats and record prize money: New, fast-paced poker formats such as blitz and fast-fold poker are exciting the younger generation with short, intense games. At the same time, extended tournaments are generating record prize money both online and offline. The WSOP Main Event 2023, for example, achieved the largest prize pool in US poker history at USD 93.4 million. And the competition between major series such as the WSOP, WPT and EPT, which took place almost simultaneously in 2024, is driving the stakes even higher.
  3. The role of AI and ethics: Artificial intelligence is having a decisive impact on modern poker. AI tools analyze huge amounts of data and help players to optimize their strategies. But there is a downside to this development: the use of such technologies raises ethical questions. Should it be allowed to use AI solvers during tournaments? Many experts are calling for clear, uniform rules in order to maintain a balance between technical advantages and fair competition. One issue that is also receiving more attention is the rise of organized poker bots in various contexts.
  4. A progressive game for all generations: Whether it's fast-paced formats, VR adventures or the strategic depth of classic variants, poker is appealing to more players today than ever before. Official recognition as a mental sport and the growing influence of streamers and content creators are steering the game towards an exciting future. One thing is clear: poker is not standing still, but is adapting to the needs of a dynamic, tech-savvy world.
With the new wave of talent and technology, poker is more exciting than ever. It is evolving not only as a game, but also as a global community and an important industry. However, the challenges lie in balancing innovation and fairness. It's a balancing act that will likely play a key role in determining how poker evolves in the coming years - and how the cards will ultimately be reshuffled.
