Twitch loses majority of viewers in casino streams
Twitch has announced in a statement on Twitter that it has now lost the majority of viewers for casino streams. Since the new rules came into effect, gambling streams are only allowed on Twitch under very strict conditions. As a result, more and more streamers and viewers have moved to alternative platforms. But Twitch does not seem to be bothered by the loss of viewers - on the contrary.
In mid-June of this year, we published an article about an interview with Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, in which he talked about his decision to ban gambling on the platform. Twitch wanted to distance itself from illegal gambling offers and therefore decided on new guidelines. Casino streamers are now only allowed to stream their content if the gambling operator is licensed in the USA.
75 % less viewers for gambling streams on Twitch
On 2 August, Twitch announced on Twitter that it had lost around 75% of its gaming audience. However, Twitch does not seem to be too sad about this. On the contrary, it is proud that the community can now be better protected from unregulated gambling and its negative consequences.
Player protection has top priority at Twitch
With the introduction of new gambling guidelines, Twitch says that it is primarily concerned with player protection. In recent weeks and months, the platform has been criticised for not doing enough to protect its community from unregulated gambling sites. Streaming slots, roulette and dice games on the platform is now completely prohibited unless a valid licence from the United States is available. Similarly, popular but unregulated platforms such as Rollbit, Duelbits and Stake have also been blocked on Twitch. A few weeks ago, well-known streamer xQc leaked how many Kick users were active on Stake Casino.
Casino streamers: migration from Twitch to Kick.com
Many casino streamers have migrated to the competition after the new Twitch guidelines came into effect. The newly formed Kick.com platform is particularly popular with high-reach streamers. We recently reported that Kick even allows casino streams to be hidden if desired.
In addition to Kick, Rumble has also become very popular among international gambling fans as a streaming platform. Casino streams are still fully accessible on both platforms. For Twitch, losing 75% of its gambling audience in such a short period of time is likely to mean significant financial losses. However, Twitch may have saved its image at least somewhat with the new and strict rules.
