Time and again, high-tech is used to allow fraudsters to literally look into the cards of others. This is also the case in this case, in which the French police were able to catch two men who allegedly scammed tens of thousands of euros across Europe with the help of almost microscopic headphones and a special smartphone camera.

Poker offers a lot of incentives and also a wide range of opportunities for criminal activities at various levels. The combination of high stakes, which can potentially amount to millions of euros, and the necessary secrecy at the table really attracts fraudsters. The criminal fascination is intensified by the fact that the game is not only based on luck, but above all on the ability to draw the right conclusions, manipulate opponents and influence their decisions. Especially in high-stakes rounds, where the tide of a game can turn in a fraction of a second, the temptation to use illegal means to secure one's own expertise and fate increases.

The latest case uncovered by the French police in the Parisian suburb of Enghien-les-Bains shows just how advanced technological possibilities have become. The two men arrested used an almost invisible combination of micro headphones and a specially modified smartphone camera to outwit their opponents. The camera, which was attached to the side of the mobile phone, was able to capture the cards unnoticed and forward the information to an external accomplice, the so-called spotter, at lightning speed. This analysed them in real time and transmitted the optimal moves to the player via the tiny headphones, which were actually so small that they had to be removed with a magnet.

This is how the poker fraudsters proceeded

The perpetrators used a combination of innovative hardware, precise coordination and a lot of poker experience to mislead their opponents and scam huge sums of money without being noticed.

1. The man at the poker table wore micro-headphones that were so small that they sat deep in his ear canal and were therefore almost invisible. This tiny device, which is often used in espionage, enabled direct communication with an accomplice who was in a vehicle at a safe distance. The spotter in the car monitored the game from a safe distance and gave instructions to the man at the table.
2. The centrepiece of their plan, however, was a modified smartphone camera that played a crucial role in gathering information. The camera was attached to the side of a mobile phone - an unusual position, but one that allowed the device to record the dealing of cards unnoticed even when lying on its back. This setup was quite ingenious, as it gave the impression that the mobile phone had merely been put down - a common practice at the poker table that hardly arouses suspicion. The scammers apparently exploited the psychological component of poker by taking into account the distraction and high level of concentration of their opponents: Nobody at the table realised that the smartphone, which was lying there inconspicuously, was actually a surveillance tool.

How were the criminals discovered and what punishment can they expect?

The conviction of the two poker cheats was the result of sophisticated surveillance in one of the casinos used for the offences. The police are holding back on details of the investigative tactics - presumably to avoid giving copycat offenders any ideas.
