GambleAware: Some few gamblers generate the bulk of the turnover
The British Gambler Protection Organisation GambleAware has carried out a survey with seven well known online casino operators. For this purpose, around 20,000 customer accounts of each operator were analysed anonymously. In the newly published interim report, the experts’ conclusions are devastating. According to this report, some few gamblers generate the majority of the gross turnover.
In the current study, the habits of gamblers are analysed. For this purpose, the Gambler Protection Organisation GambleAware interviewed seven well known online casinos and online betting operators. The organisation then received from each provider the anonymous information of 20,000 customer accounts to be able to evaluate them. In total there was an analysis of the information of more than 139,000 customer accounts. A common timeframe was chosen for the evaluation which took place between the 1st. July 2018 und the 30th. June 2019.
Bulk of gross turnover is coming from a very small number of gamblers
In the evaluation of the data, the GambleAware discovered, that very few gamblers were responsible for the bulk of the gross turnover. This also means, that a very limited number of players generate the lion’s share of the turnover of the casinos. It is not rare, that these are gamblers with a problematic gambling behaviour. It is often the case, that these excessive players are males of a younger age. Generally speaking, persons in the age group of 25 to 34 years in particular, gamble online. Only a few weeks ago, we reported, whether young gamble addicts are more prone to commit suicide.
So far, most online-casino providers have constantly denied the claim that some few players are responsible for the largest share of the turnover. However the extensive evaluation of GambleAware produced other results. In the concluding lines of the investigation the British Gamblers’ Protection Organisation summarizes the findings once again:
“(…) at the same time a small percentage of the customer accounts was used excessively and have produced significant losses. The result: A small number of customers generated a large percentage of the gross gambling yield (GGY)”.
Slot machines are responsible for 60 % of the gross turnover
As the experts from GambleAware concluded, the online-slots on their own are responsible for more than half (60 %) of the total turnover. This means, that for the gambling providers there is not any other product which is more important and more lucrative than the virtual slot machines.

Besides this, it is also interesting, that nearly seven from ten account users (69.7 %) of online casino providers belong to male players. The latter generate 74 % of the total turnover whereas female players only generate 26 %. Therefore males are clearly still considered the most important target group.
The data evaluation has also shown that on average timewise, females spend significantly longer time gambling than males. From this one can conclude, that females play with clearly lower round bets than their male gambling counterparts. Besides online casinos, the gambler protection organisation also scrutinized sports betting operators.
Nearly one in four betting customers wins when betting
During the investigation period, i.e. from mid 2018 to mid 2019, the experts from GambleAware established, that around 23 % of the betting customers had a positive balance. All in all nearly one in every fourth betting customer managed to earn money from betting within a year.
Only 2.2 % of the betting customers had to accept a total loss of over 2000 Pounds during the period under review. In this case, 94 % of the total turnover is generated by males. Besides football bets, sport bets are also especially popular.
Besides, the data evaluation of GambleAware has for example shown, that E-Sport-Bets are nearly exclusively placed by men. Four out of five E-Sport-betting customers were here younger than 35 years. On the other hand, horserace bets were mostly popular with the older betting customers, those over 55 years.

Conclusion
From the results, one can conclude, that contrary to the opinion of many operators, excessive gambling generates the majority of the online turnover. Besides this, Impressive from the data evaluation, was the fact, that more than half of the total turnover comes from classical slot machines. In the field of online sports betting, 23 % of the users managed to make a profit, during the period under review. It is definitely the case also, that males make up the lion’s share of the venturesome gamblers. As GambleAware announced, this year the evaluation will continue. This will not be limited to the analysis of the data of the providers, but surveys will also be carried out amongst the gamblers.
