Not every gambling fan can see the point of social casinos: for many, the sticking point is that you can play typical casino games there, but you can't actually win money. Nevertheless, such offers are very popular internationally - and especially in Germany. SOFTSWISS recently published a large data analysis to find out why this is the case, who typically gambles in social casinos and which games are popular.

Social casinos are essentially characterised by a combination of traditional casino games with social interaction options and virtual (play money) currencies. Users usually register via social media or special apps and can then play a variety of well-known games such as slots, poker, blackjack or roulette. Instead of real money, digital chips or coins are used, which can be acquired by logging in regularly, completing tasks or making in-app purchases, for example. This play money makes it possible to place bets and win prizes that have no real monetary value.

The term "social casino" comes from the fact that such offers are often integrated with social networks so that players can access them, share their successes, invite or challenge friends and take part in community events. In a way, the concept of other social network games is transferred to online casinos.

The gamification and social aspects create a captivating and entertaining gaming experience for quite a few people. The particular advantage that fans see in this concept is that financial losses are largely eliminated, while the thrill of gambling is still conveyed. "Largely" because there are often hidden expenses lurking in social casinos or the apps in question. The majority of players who regularly use real money in digital casinos see social casinos as a waste of time, boring or a rip-off.

SOFTSWISS now provides deeper insights into the usage patterns in social casinos and sheds light on why and how they are accepted by different groups. Data from around 700,000 SpinArena.net users serves as the basis. The renowned provider of software solutions for the iGaming industry claims to be one of the driving forces behind this platform, which is described as the fastest growing social casino in Europe.

Who uses social casinos?

According to the Australian Communications and Media Authority, around 85 million people worldwide play in social casinos every day.

The majority of social casino players actually come from Germany. In second place are the British and Irish, followed by players from other European countries such as the Netherlands, Latvia, Italy, Greece and Poland. No data is available for other parts of the world, as the platform used for the analysis focusses primarily on Europe.

According to SOFTSWISS, over 80 per cent of these people conceal their age and gender. At 12.45 per cent, young men up to the age of 30 are comparatively willing to provide such information. Only around 3 per cent of women between 30 and 40 state when they were born.

According to SOFTSWISS, most users play between 16:00 and 21:00

The data collected shows that most social casino players are active in the afternoon and evening. The rush hour is between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., which makes sense as other leisure activities typically take place during this period (after work). The time when the fewest users are logged in is also not surprising: this is between 02:00 and 05:00 in the morning.

Mondays are the least busy - most people play on Fridays and Sundays, with the difference between the peaks and troughs being just 10 per cent.

The average gaming session lasts around 47 minutes. The longest session recorded this year lasted a whopping 12 hours.

SOFTSWISS emphasises:

"Analysing players' habits revealed that the average user's activities follow predictable patterns and are fully in line with human biorhythms and social responsibility."

And what is the favourite thing to gamble on in the social casino?

Here too, SOFTSWISS naturally refers exclusively to the data from SpinArena.net. However, as the number of users is considerable, the figures are likely to be representative. According to this, half of all gaming sessions are spent on the top 15 games. These are actually always well-known slots.

The top 5 most popular games account for a third of all sessions. Gates of Olympus is particularly popular at the moment. More than 10 per cent prefer to use the slot. It is followed by Sugar Rush with 9 per cent and Sweet Bonanza with 6 per cent. Rounding off the most popular five are Big Bass Splash (3 per cent) and Legacy of Dead (3 per cent).

According to the people responsible for SOFTSWISS and SpinArena.net, this is why people like to play in social casinos

Jochen Martinez, founder of Ously Games GmbH, which is essentially responsible for SpinArena.net, emphasises the security and social aspect in particular:

"This analysis perfectly illustrates how social casinos fulfil the same needs of players as traditional casinos while offering a safer gaming experience. The combination of gaming with social interactions provides a unique environment and neutralises financial risks. Players can enjoy activities such as connecting with friends while playing their favourite games."

For Vitali Matsukevich, Chief Operating Officer at SOFTSWISS, it is above all the new, trendy aspect that convinces many players:

"Social casinos are part of a megatrend in the global entertainment industry, where players want traditional casino entertainment in a new guise."

Conclusion

Social casinos are certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but they certainly have a large following. The data from SOFTSWISS (and other sources) show that tens of millions of people access these offers every day and sometimes make intensive use of them. In Germany in particular, play money games with their missions, tournaments and the option of sharing on social networks are extremely popular. The games are very similar to those in conventional online casinos.
