The former Green Party parliamentary group leader in the Emsland district council is currently on trial at the Lingen district court for commercial breach of trust. The local politician is accused of transferring a total of 33,000 euros from the trust account of the Green Party district association to her private account, among other things. She then gambled the money away in an online casino.

The district court in Lingen is currently having to deal with a case in which the former Green Party politician Birgit Kemmer is accused of embezzling a five-figure sum from the trust account of the Green Party's district association in Emsland. The trial was originally due to start in March. However, the opening of the trial was delayed due to a lawyer falling ill and a judge being replaced. Even the third attempt a few days ago has not yet resulted in a judgement being passed.

Former parliamentary group leader of the Greens charged with commercial embezzlement

The former parliamentary group leader of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen in the Emsland district council is accused of transferring money from association and party accounts to her private account in over 20 cases. This allegedly resulted in a total loss of 33,000 euros. Specifically, the 63-year-old is alleged to have embezzled 26,000 euros from the parliamentary group account financed with taxpayers' money and a further 7,000 euros from a women's cultural association in which she was treasurer.

The Greens from Emsland emphasise that no damage was caused to the party or the taxpayer, as the money has since been repaid in full by Kemmer. Kemmer has since resigned from all her political offices.

Green politician gambled away money at an online casino

After Kemmer transferred the money from her association or party account to her private account, she is said to have deposited it at an online casino based in the Netherlands. It is not known whether the former parliamentary group leader of the Greens is or was addicted to gambling. According to the indictment, the money is said to have been embezzled over a period of one and a half years.

We have already reported several times on GambleJoe about people who have committed criminal offences because of their gambling addiction. In March 2021, for example, we reported on a gambling-addicted employee who embezzled almost 900,000 euros from the tax office. In another case, a bank employee from Chemnitz with a gambling addiction embezzled around one million euros.

To date, the Lingen Regional Court has not yet handed down a judgement in the case. In the first trial in March, a lawyer fell ill at short notice. The second time, the trial failed to start because a new judge first had to familiarise herself with the case. And now, in July, the trial has been interrupted again as the court considers further investigations to be necessary. A new date has not yet been set.
