Scratchcard: Woman wins USD 2 million instead of USD 2,000
A woman from Canada thought she had won US$2,000 on a scratch-off lottery ticket she had bought and was naturally delighted. But then came the shock: instead of the $2,000 she thought she had won, the Californian lottery winner won a whopping $2 million. But how did the mistake happen, and what does the winner plan to do with the million-dollar prize?
The California Lottery announced a few days ago that the lucky winner bought a crossword scratch ticket at a donut shop in Compton. After buying the ticket, Ruby Evans scratched it in the shop's car park and immediately realised she had won. But first she thought she had "only" won US$2,000. Delighted, she went back into the shop to collect her $2,000 prize - and then came the shock.
Canadian woman wins US$2 million instead of US$2,000
After the cashier at the doughnut shop scanned her scratch card, the correct prize of two million US dollars appeared on the terminal. In other words, her winnings were about 1.8 million euros. It is unclear why the scratch ticket buyer initially thought the prize was only USD 2,000. Naturally, she was overjoyed and could not believe she had just won the grand prize. It was only in February that we at GambleJoe reported that Lotto Niedersachsen was now offering a Scratchcard with a chance to win the grand prize of one million euros available for purchase.
Evans told the Canadian Lottery Company that she was asked in the store if she had won enough. The background: This is not the first time the Canadian has won a prize in the doughnut shop with scratch tickets. In 2013, she won a whopping $100,000 on a scratch-off ticket. A short time later, she won another $5,000. It will be interesting to see how discreet the scratchcard millionaire is with her winnings. In 2021, for example, a woman won a lottery ticket in the US state of Oklahoma. Scratchcard winner murdered by husband.
Are there scratch cards in online arcades?
Unfortunately, there are currently no online casinos with a German gambling licence where scratch cards can be bought online. This is unlikely to change in the near future as online gambling operators have only applied for licences for virtual slots, sports betting and online poker. In an article that appeared on GambleJoe in April last year, we asked ourselves this question, Whether scratch cards are worth it in online casinos.
Conclusion
For the third time a woman from Canada has won an impressive amount on a scratch card. The first time it was $100,000, the second $5,000 and now the third time $2 million.
