New boss, new direction for Microgaming
There has been some upheaval at Microgaming recently. In particular, the sale of Quickfire has caused quite a stir in the industry. New boss and CEO Stephen Fisk said in a recent interview that the company now wants to focus on the platform business. This is where the roots of the company lie - and this is how the brand became big in the first place, he points out.
Many of us love slots like Beautiful Bones, Immortal Romance, Thunderstruck or of course Mega Moolah. These and many other titles are firmly associated with Microgaming in our minds. In reality, however, they no longer appear under the logo of the Isle of Man software experts or their long-standing partner Quickfire. Games Global bought a large part of the portfolio in 2022. The company has also undergone other changes in recent years.
Now, new CEO Stephen Fisk has commented on the changes and outlined a clear direction for the future. In the future, the brand will act even less as a games provider. The focus will (again) be on providing innovative platforms, which was the core business in the early days of the company.
This is the current status at Microgaming
Microgaming has undergone a period of significant change in recent years. The closure of the Microgaming Poker Network (MPN) in 2020 and the sale of Quickfire, transferring a huge catalogue of games to Games Global in 2022, were particularly drastic.
Over the past decade, Microgaming has focused primarily on slots and casinos. In this context, the separation from Quickfire caused some surprise in the industry. However, Stephen Fisk sees a lot of good in the move: "It's not so much a change of direction as it is a focus on what made the company successful in the first place," he said.
Fisk explains:"It is important to remember that Microgaming began as a full platform provider, offering a range of services beyond the provision of games and content. We have maintained poker and bingo networks as well as other services and products over time, but we have always maintained our identity around our complete platform product.“
Microgaming remains closely associated with online slots
Although Quickfire has a new owner, the typical casino offering will remain associated with the Microgaming brand. The company continues to work closely with Games Global and, according to Fisk, is also largely responsible for bringing its games portfolio to customers: "We continue to provide the technology platform that enables Games Global to distribute its games worldwide.
Microgaming will continue to be present in the market. Developments will be followed closely - products, content, services, etc. will remain. As will the pursuit of innovation.
However, everything is being scaled back a little:"We are returning to Microgaming's core identity as a platform provider. However, we must not forget that the casino is a very large part of our customer and revenue base. It is extremely important to us," said Fisk.
About Stephen Fisk
Stephen Fisk is the youngest ever chief executive to lead Microgaming. One of his predecessors was Roger Raatgever, who held the role of CEO for 17 years and led Microgaming through a pivotal creative period in the 2000s and 2010s. The upheaval at the company was heralded by Raatgever's departure in 2018. He was followed by John Coleman, Andrew Clucas and now Stephen Fisk. Fisk, like his predecessors, has been with the company for a long time and is therefore very familiar with its structures.
In general, he brings with him many years of experience in the gaming industry. For more than 20 years, he has worked professionally with slot machines, poker, sports betting and the like. For example, he was responsible for the expansion into sports betting at PokerStars operator Rational Group in 2013, which was a big step for the previously poker-only platform.
At Microgaming, Fisk has been Chief Operating Officer since 2018. His focus here has been on platform development. This, in turn, is likely to have been a key factor in his move to the company's top management position, given the current development of the company's business direction.
Responsible gaming will be an important issue
Microgaming is committed to doing more to ensure a safe and secure gaming environment. They are offering tailor-made solutions for partners that meet the requirements of regulators in different countries. Special security measures will also be developed. Microgaming will also provide customers who wish to integrate their own tools with the appropriate technology and advice.
In addition, the company is committed to supporting industry-wide player protection projects such as GamCare's National Gambling Helpline and peer-to-peer group therapy trials, as well as local programmes.
Stephen Fisk says specifically:"It's about the culture and mindset of the people, not just the products we offer. We are trying to instil responsible gaming awareness throughout the company. We believe this will help us provide better products and services to our customers."
Conclusion
Microgaming will (continue to) change, but the brand is likely to remain present in digital casinos - not only on a business level, but also close to the customer. The company has been with us for too long to simply disappear into the backend or background of online gaming venues.
Fisk agrees, stressing that the company's new, narrower focus is not so much a change of direction as a return to its roots. There is a lot of value in the brand name, he says: "Everyone knows 'Games by Microgaming' and many remember that they ran the first online casino back in 1994. It is not forgotten that the casinos have been a big part of the company's success.
According to Fisk, quality products and first-class service have been key to the company's 29-year existence: "We need to focus on the legacy of always having something to offer customers and continue to leverage those relationships as best we can. We also need to communicate to the rest of the industry that we are still leading the way.
