The German Gambling Association (DGGS) has published a study that sheds light on the regional differences in the area of legal online gambling in Germany. The data shows which federal states have an above-average number of legal online gambling centres. But what percentage of the population participates in legal online gambling in the various federal states?

The DGGS has regularly conducted surveys on participation in gambling. According to these surveys, there are regional differences in terms of the popularity of the legal online gambling market in the individual federal states. Just a few days ago, we reported that 12 new slots are available at BingBong and JackpotPiraten. Both online casinos are operated by DGGS.

Participation in legal gambling is highest in Baden-Württemberg

According to the DGGS analysis, people in Baden-Württemberg were the most likely to participate in legal online gambling in Germany in the fourth quarter of 2023 (11.8%). Legal online gambling was similarly popular in Saarland (11.6%) and Bavaria (11%).

According to the DGGS data, people from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are significantly less likely to be found in legal online gambling shops - participation here was just 6.3%. Participation in the legal gambling market was similarly low in Berlin (6.9%) and Bremen (7.5%) at the end of 2023. In Thuringia (7.7%), legal online casinos were also not yet very popular at the end of 2023.

More and more people are participating in legal online gambling

What is interesting about the DGGS data is that the popularity of the legal online gambling market has been on the rise since the first quarter of 2024 in particular. At the beginning of the year, the proportion of the population participating in legal online gambling was already 9.3% in Berlin, 9.6% in Brandenburg and 11.0% in Saxony-Anhalt. In Baden-Württemberg, online gambling participation recently stood at 13.7% and in Rhineland-Palatinate at 13.6%.

It can be deduced from this development that more and more people in Germany are interested in legal online gambling. It can also be assumed that interest in the legal online gambling market will continue to grow in the coming quarters and years. Unfortunately, it is not clear from the DGGS data how the analysis was carried out in detail.

Just a few days ago, we at GambleJoe reported on a study according to which gambling addiction is even more dangerous than previously assumed.
