Curacao is a country in the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean, which is over 8,400 kilometres away from Berlin. The 444 square kilometre island has been internationally renowned in the online gambling industry for many years, as many online casinos have a licence from Curacao. But what is life like on the island of online casinos?

It was only in February of this year that we at GambleJoe reported that the first licence had been issued in Curacao as part of the gambling reform. In fact, Curacao is not only very popular with international gambling enthusiasts, but also with "Caribbean expats". After all, Curacao has an average annual temperature of almost 28 degrees. Curacao also scores particularly well with foreigners thanks to its low VAT and a population that helps each other out.

What is life like on the Caribbean island of Curacao?

Curacao is located around 60 kilometres north of the Venezuelan coast in the middle of the Caribbean. Compared to other places in the Caribbean, Curacao is somewhat off the beaten track. It has a pleasant climate with little rainfall and the island's 150,000 inhabitants have a reputation for being helpful and courteous. Although Curacao officially belongs to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, it is not part of the European Union.

The first interesting thing about Curacao is the fact that the VAT rate here is only six per cent. In Germany, this is more than three times as much at 19 per cent for most goods.

However, it is not the case that over 8,400 kilometres away from the German capital Berlin, products are always cheaper than in Germany. On the contrary: many products have to be imported to the Caribbean island and are correspondingly more expensive. This applies in particular to chilled food, household goods, electrical appliances and tools. On the other hand, vegetables from neighbouring South America, for example, are significantly cheaper than in Germany.

Curacao has a total population of around 150,000 on an area of 444 square kilometres. The official languages in Curacao are English, Portuguese and Papiamentu. The capital and economic centre of the Caribbean island is Wilhelmstad. The currency used in Curacao is the Antillean guilder (ANG), whereby two Antillean guilders are worth approximately one euro. Alternatively, Curacao can also be paid in US dollars. In addition to tourism and oil refining, the country's largest economic sectors naturally also include the gambling industry.

How present are online casinos in Curacao in everyday life?

A number of online casinos have a registered office and a gambling licence on the sunny Caribbean island. In everyday life, however, a resident of Curacao does not realise the importance of the online gambling industry, as many gambling companies only maintain a kind of letterbox here. Back in August last year, we at GambleJoe asked ourselves what the future holds for Curacao casinos.

Note: Players from Germany are currently not allowed to play in online casinos with a licence from Curacao. In Germany, gambling enthusiasts are only allowed to play in online casinos with a German licence. This licence is only issued by the Joint Gaming Authority of the federal states (GGL). A few months ago, we asked ourselves in this context why players are active in online casinos without a German licence.

Conclusion

Basically, life is very good on Curacao. An average annual temperature of almost 28 degrees combined with little rainfall ensure that you can feel at home here. In addition, the inhabitants of the Caribbean island are considered helpful and friendly. However, the truth for interested "Caribbean expats" is that Curacao is over 8,400 kilometres away from Berlin and is only 444 square kilometres in size.
