Gambling is an exciting thing: for most gamblers, it's not just about the chance to win (big) prizes, but also about the thrill of (working towards) success. This thrill was recently the undoing of a man in a Singapore casino. After he had managed to hit a jackpot worth millions, he collapsed: Heart attack. To make matters worse, bystanders filmed the incident and posted the videos on the internet.

Gambling has exerted a fascinating attraction on people for centuries. Whether in elegant casinos, at a round of poker at home or by simply spinning a slot machine (on the internet): The element of the unpredictable and the prospect of a big win make gamblers' hearts beat faster. The mixture of risk, thrills and the possibility of changing your life abruptly is what makes gambling so exciting and enticing. The dream of a jackpot that can change everything is deeply rooted in the psyche of many gamblers and is fuelled time and again by stories of sudden riches.

But this excitement can also have a dark side, as a tragic incident at the Marina Bay Sands Casino in Singapore impressively demonstrates. A man suffered a heart attack and collapsed after a surprise jackpot win. The incident was unfortunately recorded by other casino visitors. The clips are circulating on the Internet and have even led to fake reports about the possible death of the man concerned. This incident not only shows the intense or emotional and physical stress that gambling can bring, with the thrill sometimes coming at a high price. It also casts a critical light on today's society, in which the need for sensation and viral content often outweighs the compassion and privacy of others.

The €3.8 million win was too much for the 'lucky' man

Panic recently broke out in a Singapore casino when a man collapsed while celebrating a jackpot win. The unidentified "lucky man" was delighted to receive the equivalent of 3.8 million euros. As reported by the international press, the incident took place on 22 June at the Marina Bay Sands Casino in Singapore. The gambler, who was apparently well-known in the house, was full of joy after realising the life-changing amount. While celebrating and punching the air in joy, he suddenly fell to the floor and suffered a heart attack.

As he collapsed, onlookers gathered around him, "diligently" snapping and filming (we are deliberately not showing the footage here) while staff assisted him. A woman accompanying the man was very worried and begged the staff to give him medical assistance. The victim was quickly taken to hospital where he is recovering from his heart attack.

In the meantime, there were many reports on social media in combination with the footage that the man had died, which industry insiders and casino officials denied. A spokesperson condemned the false report and pointed out the horror it had caused the man's family:

"Unfortunately, the hoax has gone viral and the video, which is still circulating on the internet, has caused some distress to the guest's family. It is clear that no guest died in the Marina Bay Sands casino after hitting a jackpot. There was one guest who passed out in the casino, but he is alive and recovering."

Some sources have also disputed the amount won by the player. There is no official information on this from the casino.

In fact, such incidents happen again and again: A similarly unfortunate incident occurred as recently as April in the USA, when a man suffered a cardiac arrest at a blackjack table in Las Vegas.

Incidentally, the Marina Bay casino is owned by Las Vegas Sands, a Nevada-based company that generated a turnover of 10.4 billion dollars last year.

Can the excitement and thrill of gambling be dangerous to your health?

This question inevitably arises when you consider the tragic incident at the Marina Bay Sands Casino in Singapore. Gambling is often associated with intense emotional reactions - from euphoric joy at winning to deep frustration at losing. The thrill that makes gambling so exciting can also cause significant physical reactions. During particularly intense moments, such as winning a big jackpot, the sudden increase in adrenaline and other stress hormones can put a heavy strain on the cardiovascular system. For people with pre-existing conditions or undetected heart problems, this state of tension can lead to serious health risks.

The risks associated with gambling are an aspect that is often overlooked, but should be given urgent attention in view of such events. In addition to the psychological addiction that gambling can cause, the physical effects of the extreme excitement and associated stress should not be underestimated. These can range from high blood pressure and tachycardia to heart attacks and other serious health problems. It is therefore important that gamblers are aware of their own health and take precautions where necessary.

One thing needs to be said at this point: These conclusions are of course not medically proven, but are the result of in-depth research on the subject. If you would like a precise and reliable breakdown of possible risks, please contact a recognised expert.

Conclusion

Did it really have to be? This incident is another example of a worrying trend where the urge to capture and share extraordinary moments supersedes empathy and respect for those affected by extreme situations. While sharing images and videos can be harmless or even helpful in some situations, in cases like this it is a clear sign of disrespect for the victims and their families.

The following should not be overlooked: Of course, many reports are about sensationalism - we, too, are always reading about the curious, sensational or scandalous. However, we always have a respectful view of people and, above all, want to provide real added value in terms of information. A certain amount of tongue-in-cheek humour is also a must. But a call for caution, prudence and consideration is also useful from time to time.
