Scratch cards are real gambling classics. At least many players of a certain age will remember that as children they were able to quickly scratch off a ticket with their parents or relatives (albeit dubiously today) when they handed in their weekly lottery ticket. To this day, the small, colourful tickets with their promising fields are a real hit for a quick game in between. To make them more attractive and contemporary and bring them into the digital here and now, Sachsenlotto has come up with a special feature called GlüXBooster.

Scratch cards have been a firm favourite in the German gaming market for decades and are a classic in the state lottery range. They were introduced in Germany back in the 1970s and quickly became very popular - mainly due to their uncomplicated game principle and the immediate payout of prizes. With just a few coin scratches, players could find out immediately whether they were one of the lucky ones. Although the structure of lottery games has evolved considerably over the years, scratch cards (now available in numerous versions) remain a central part of the offering.

Now, however, Sachsenlotto is going one step further and launching a modern feature for the digital era with the GlüXBooster portal. Since 2 September 2024, the lottery's scratchcards have been equipped with special codes that can be registered online or in an app. Players not only have the chance to win instant prizes, but can also use their tickets for weekly extra games with prizes of up to €10,000 and more. This system brings the traditional lottery scratch card into the digital age and offers a double winning opportunity: an innovation that makes the format even more attractive to today's technology-savvy target groups.

How GlüXBooster works

The GlüXBooster system from Sachsenlotto adds a digital dimension to the classic scratch card and gives players an additional opportunity to win attractive prizes.

  1. Registration: The first step in using the feature is to register on the website ‘gluexbooster.de’ or via the corresponding app. The app is currently only available in the Apple App Store, but a version for Android users is due to follow soon.
  2. Collect boosters: After registering, players can activate the so-called booster codes of their purchased scratchcards. Corresponding character strings can be found behind the scratch fields of ‘Hot 7’, ‘X10’, ‘Lucky Pig’ or other tickets. They are always available regardless of whether a ticket yields an instant win or not.
  3. Enter the booster: The codes are available either as a 32-digit alphanumeric string or as a QR code. The QR code enables quick and easy redemption via the app, while manual entry of the character string is also possible on the website or in the mobile application. The value of the ticket purchased plays a decisive role, as the player receives 100 boosters for every euro of purchase value.
  4. Sweepstakes: These boosters can be collected and used for various competitions that are regularly available on the GlüXBooster portal. Participation in a promotion usually costs 100 boosters, which are then invested in the corresponding prize pool. A special feature is the wheel of fortune. Here, participants have the chance to win additional boosters, which increases the opportunity to take part in the competitions. Boosters are valid for one year after activation - and there is no limit to the number of times you can redeem them or take part in the competitions.
  5. Prizes and costs: Prizes vary depending on the promotion and can range from cash prizes to non-cash prizes such as vouchers and exclusive experiences. There is also a leaderboard on which the most successful players and their earnings are regularly presented, which creates additional incentive. Use of the GlüXBooster portal is free of charge for participants, apart from the purchase of the scratchcards themselves.

This system combines the traditional scratch card with the digital world and increases the appeal of the classic game by introducing gamification elements such as the wheel of fortune and the leaderboard - especially for a digitally savvy target group.

Major promotional initiative underway throughout Saxony

To mark the launch of the GlüXBooster portal, Sachsenlotto has launched an eye-catching promotional initiative that is creatively attracting attention in Dresden and soon throughout Saxony. As can be read in the relevant press release, numerous GlüXBooster employees were initially sent symbolically through the streets of Dresden in the colours of the portal to address passers-by directly and invite them to try out the new feature.

This promotional campaign was not just a simple street campaign, but was complemented by the use of a specially designed tram that travelled through the Saxon state capital. At the wheel of this special tram was Maik Zeuge, better known as the ‘Tramfluencer’, who has already achieved cult status in the region thanks to his presence on social media. As a testimonial for the GlüXBooster portal, Zeuge was the face of this first wave of advertising, which was intended to further increase awareness of the campaign.

But this was just the beginning of a large-scale promotional offensive. In the coming weeks, Sachsenlotto plans to ‘unleash’ the GlüXBooster squad on other cities throughout Saxony. As part of these promotional campaigns, the partnership with TeamSportSachsen e.V. will be emphasised in particular, enabling the team to be present in regional football stadiums. Together with local sports clubs, Sachsenlotto will be present there, especially on match days, and is expected to provide attractive goodies and prize opportunities for interested parties. This promotional strategy is intended to strengthen the link between sport or local sports promotion and digital gambling and raise awareness of the GlüXBooster portal among the general public in the long term.

The campaign is a good example of the increasing fusion of digital marketing and traditional promotion. By focussing on local personalities such as Maik Zeuge and well-known sporting events, Sachsenlotto appeals to a broad spectrum of target groups - from tech-savvy younger people to traditional lottery players. This multi-channel strategy not only ensures a greater reach, but also positions the GlüXBooster portal as an innovative feature in the regional gambling market.

What those responsible say about the new GlüXBooster portal

Jens Hollritt and Guido Hannich from Sächsische Lotto-GmbH spoke directly in Sachsenlotto's press statement.

Hollritt, Head of Corporate Development/Product Management, emphasised in particular the opportunity to cash in a little extra with GlüXBooster - at no extra cost:

‘Instead of one, GlüXBooster now offers our scratchcard customers two chances to win directly - and at no extra cost. Every ticket is a winner, because even scratch cards can be used as boosters and enhance the gaming experience.’

For Hannich, Head of Communications, the innovative nature of the portal and the promotional campaign were particularly noteworthy:

‘We want to stand out - with the GlüXBooster as a second chance, but especially with cool outfits for our real GlüXBoosters. They are now on the road in Bavaria and equipped with lots of boosters.’

Conclusion

Sachsenlotto's GlüXBooster portal brings a breath of fresh air to the world of scratchcards and combines traditional gambling with modern, digital elements. By integrating online and app-based winning opportunities, Sachsenlotto is creating an additional incentive system that rewards players for their loyalty and offers them double the chances of winning. With the ongoing promotional campaign in Saxony, from street campaigns to cooperation with sports initiatives, the company is relying on a well thought-out multi-channel strategy that appeals to both tech-savvy and traditional lottery fans. It remains to be seen whether the GlüXBooster concept will establish itself in other federal states beyond Saxony - there is undoubtedly potential for it to gain traction at a national level.
