Of course, all of this has also been happening online for a long time - and it was precisely in this environment that a German recently managed to win the biggest jackpot of all time.

The classic card game is much more than a leisure activity - it offers professionals the chance to win millions in highly strategic moves through tactical skill and psychological sophistication. Names such as Justin Bonomo and Bryn Kenney are true legends on the poker scene, making headlines with record-breaking jackpots: Bonomo, for example, raked in over 57 million dollars in his career and Kenney managed to pocket 20.5 million in just one tournament.

In this increasingly dynamic world, Germany's Moritz Dietrich has now also secured himself a place among the ‘top scorers’. The 33-year-old won a whopping 3.6 million euros (approx. 4 million dollars) in the World Series of Poker online edition on GGPoker at the end of September.

It didn't look good for Dietrich at first, but he was ultimately able to come out on top

Moritz Dietrich had to nibble at a significant chip deficit, which meant that his chances of victory were anything but good. However, the tide was to turn (literally). Firstly, Benjamin Rolle, another German, was also represented in the final phase of the tournament. Starting as a short stack, Rolle briefly managed to hold his own against the Russian chip leader Evgenii Akimov with an early double-up. Dietrich later took out Chinese player Hai Pan before Isaac Baron beat Ilya Anatski in a coinflip to eliminate the Belarusian in sixth place. The remaining players fought fierce duels, with the lead constantly changing hands. Akimov managed to gain a clear advantage after a blind battle when he kept the upper hand at several critical moments, including a brutal bad beat against Baron. In the end, Baron had to settle for fourth place and prize money of 1,843,337 dollars. Ferreira, who had played strongly up to that point, also fell victim to Akimov's superiority and left the tournament in third place.

In the heads-up against Akimov, who started the duel with a massive chip lead, Dietrich initially seemed to have no chance. However, he showed nerves of steel and used a winning coinflip to get back into the game. The decisive moment came when he countered Akimov's all-in with a reraised nut-straight and finally turned the tide. From then on, Dietrich took control and defended his lead with a decisive call against a bluff to secure the win. He crowned this outstanding success with his first WSOP bracelet and prize money of 4,021,012 US dollars, while Akimov left the tournament in second place with a still immense 3,099,896 dollars.

1. At the top of this list is Bryn Kenney, who won an incredible USD 20.5 million in the Triton Million - one of the most exclusive high-stakes events in the poker world. The tournament, which took place in London in 2019, is considered the most expensive buy-in competition in history. Participants had to pay an entry fee of a whopping £1 million. Interestingly, Kenney didn't even win the heads-up, but secured most of the proceeds through a deal - a common practice in poker where the remaining players redistribute the prize money before the game ends.
2. In second place for the highest winnings is US player Justin Bonomo, who scooped a whopping USD 10 million at the 2018 WSOP in ‘The Big One for One Drop’ event - a charity tournament with a buy-in of USD 1 million. With over 57 million in lifetime earnings, Bonomo is one of the most successful players of all time. Fun fact: He is considered to be particularly aggressive and often maximises his advantage with clever bluffing strategies, which earned him the nickname ‘ZeeJustin’ in the poker scene.
3. Daniel Negreanu, one of the most recognisable names in poker, is also high on the list with his numerous wins. Although he doesn't top the list for biggest individual winnings, he has earned more than $46 million over his career and holds six WSOP bracelets. An iconic moment was the WSOP High Roller event in 2014, where Negreanu won $8.28 million. Incidentally, he is known for his table talk, a technique where you try to read and manipulate your opponents through conversation.
4. Another notable win goes back to Antonio Esfandiari, who took first place in the first edition of the Big One for One Drop in 2012 and secured 18.3 million dollars. This sum was unprecedented at the time and elevated Esfandiari to the Olympus of poker legends.
