Gauselmann takes over ten casinos in Lower Saxony
The Gauselmann Group has won the tender for the casino licence issued by the state of Lower Saxony. This means that the family-owned company from East Westphalia will take over the ten casinos and slot machine casinos in Lower Saxony from September 2024. The casinos are currently still operated by Spielbanken Niedersachsen GmbH. In addition, a further Gauselmann casino is to be built in neighbouring North Rhine-Westphalia.
Earlier this summer, we reported that Gauselmann's management had criticised gambling regulation in Germany. A few days ago, the Gauselmann Group announced in a press release that it had won the tender for the casino licence in the state of Lower Saxony. This means that all casinos in Lower Saxony will be operated by Gauselmann.
Casino licence in Lower Saxony initially valid for 15 years
After the Gauselmann Group won the tender, the yellow Merkur sun will shine over all casinos in Lower Saxony from 1 September next year. There are currently slot machines and casinos in Bad Bentheim, Bad Pyrmont, Bad Zwischenahn, Braunschweig, Göttingen, Hanover, Norderney, Osnabrück, Seevetal and Wolfsburg. The licence is initially limited to a period of 15 years.
The ten casinos and gaming houses in Lower Saxony are currently still operated by Spielbanken Niedersachsen GmbH. This is a wholly owned subsidiary of Casinos Austria International GmbH (CAI). This in turn is owned by the gambling giant Casinos Austria AG.
The official press release reads:
"The decisive factor in awarding the casino licence was the Gauselmann Group's proven exemplary expertise in the operation of casinos. A total of 15 locations in the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt, North Rhine-Westphalia, Berlin and Rhineland-Palatinate already demonstrate the company's success".
400 employees at ten locations will be taken on
The Gauselmann Group wants all 400 employees at the ten locations to be quickly integrated into the East Westphalian company. It was not until 2021 that the Gauselmann Group also took over the operation of the four casinos in North Rhine-Westphalia. In September of this year, it was also announced that the Gauselmann Group would become the new premium partner of 1.
New casino location planned in Siegburg
In addition, the Gauselmann Group announced that a new casino site will soon be built in Siegburg. The official press release is available online here. Those responsible are expecting "144,000 visitors in the first year" at the newly planned location. According to current plans, between 100 and 120 new jobs will be created in Siegburg.
Conclusion
From September 2024, the famous "Merkur sun" will be visible at the ten casinos and gaming houses in Lower Saxony. For gamblers, however, little is likely to change. Gauselmann is also planning to open a new casino in Siegburg, North Rhine-Westphalia. It will be interesting to see whether the Gauselmann Group will take over the operation of other casino sites in Germany in the future.
