The British player protection organisation GambleAware published its list of donations for the first quarter of this year a few days ago. According to this, GambleAware benefited from donations totalling the equivalent of just over 350,000 euros during this period. But how satisfactory is such an amount in view of the fact that several gambling companies, some of them worth billions, could donate?

In the past, GambleJoe has repeatedly discussed the fact that not really large sums of money are collected in the form of donations for player protection organisations. In May 2021, for example, we asked ourselves whether only peanuts were left over for the gambling addiction charity. GambleAware has now published the current list, which provides information on the financial donations in the first financial quarter of 2024.

GambleAware received donations totalling around 350,000 euros in the first quarter

As the British player protection organisation announced a few days ago, it received exactly GBP 294,722.99 in financial donations in the first quarter. This equates to around 353,500 euros. Accordingly, GambleAware received donations totalling the equivalent of almost 120,000 euros per month on average in the first few months of the year.

For a player protection organisation of this size, the amount is anything but impressive. However, it must be taken into account that donations in the first quarter of the year are traditionally always at a very low level. This is due to the fact that the large gambling groups such as Flutter or Entain do not transfer their usually large donations until the end of the year.

The fact is, however, that even the donations from the major gambling companies are (still) made on a voluntary basis. There is as yet no legal obligation to pay. GambleAware itself states as a guideline that around 0.1% of annual gross gaming revenue should be transferred as a donation. However, there are plans to introduce a mandatory donation model in the future. However, the British Gambling Authority has yet to determine the exact modalities for this.

According to GambleAware, a small number of players generate the majority of turnover for gambling companies.

Highest donation in the first quarter from SkillOnNet

A look at the list of donations also published reveals that amounts between GBP 10 and GBP 40,000 were donated in the first quarter of 2024. The highest donation was made by SkillOnNet. In January 2021, we at GambleJoe already reported on donations in the millions for the gambling addiction charity BeGambleAware. At that time, Flutter Entertainment alone donated over GBP 870,000.
