In 2024, the Darmstadt Regional Council (RP) processed an average of over 14 million queries per day via the OASIS player blocking system. In total, over five billion OASIS queries were made last year. But how can it be that there are tens of millions of such queries every day?

We at GambleJoe last reported in June last year that there were over 270,000 active player bans via OASIS. In the meantime, the number of player suspensions has risen to around 307,000. In total, the nationwide "Gambling - OASIS, Commercial Gaming" department processed around 56,000 blocking applications received in 2024. Although there were significantly more applications overall, a not inconsiderable proportion of the applications were incomplete or incorrect and could therefore not be processed.

Five billion queries in the OASIS player blocking system in 2024

The total number of queries made in the OASIS player blocking system is indeed impressive. On average, RP Darmstadt processed 14.1 million queries every day last year. This brings the total number of queries per month to around 425 million, meaning that a total of around five billion queries were made in 2024.

A query must always be made in the OASIS player blocking system when a guest enters an arcade, casino or betting shop and wishes to gamble. The same applies in catering establishments, where the player's identity is also checked against the nationwide barring system. In addition, a query is always carried out in the player blocking system if a player wishes to play in an online casino with a German license. If the player in question is one of the approximately 300,000 players currently blocked nationwide, they will be denied access to both offline and online gaming.

According to RP Darmstadt, it has only been possible for some time now to have active player bans lifted completely digitally via a corresponding application. At present, around 40,000 establishments and almost 9,000 gaming operators are connected to the nationwide player blocking system. As recently as last September, we at GambleJoe attempted to answer the question of how well players in licensed online casinos are protected from potential gambling addiction.

What are the costs per query?

The nationwide player blocking system is provided by the RP Darmstadt. However, the operators of the respective gambling services have to pay for the individual queries. In 2022, we have already researched that gambling operators will have to pay 0.0432 euros per query for up to 150,000 queries per year.

Example: An arcade has an average of 200 guests every day and each guest must be checked daily via the player blocking system. This results in pure "query costs" of around 8.50 euros per day. Calculated over the course of a year, this amounts to over 3,000 euros for around 72,000 queries for a single gaming establishment. Of course, the costs incurred are ultimately borne by the respective player.
