Almost every second adult in the United States has visited a casino at least once in the past year. This is the result of an analysis by the American Gaming Association (AGA). But what are the reasons for the high popularity of terrestrial gaming centres in the USA?

In the United States of America, land-based casino resorts are particularly popular. To be more precise, 49% of all adult citizens visited a casino resort at least once last year. To be more precise, around 122 million people visited a land-based casino resort at least once in 2023. This means that the popularity of casino resorts has now reached a new high.

Popularity of American casino resorts continues to rise

According to the American Gaming Association (AGA), the percentage of the US population that has visited a casino resort has never been higher than it was last year. Previously, the highest percentage of the population visiting a casino at least once a year was 44% and was reached in 2014 and 2019. The most recent figure was 41% in 2022. At the end of the coronavirus pandemic in 2021, the figure was just 34%. Last autumn, we at GambleJoe reported on a study according to which the gambling industry creates 1.8 million jobs in the USA.

According to current figures, around 1% of the population in the USA are pathological gamblers, i.e. addicted to gambling. In addition, 1 to 2% suffer from at least problematic gambling behaviour.

Tip: Anyone who is unsure whether they suffer from problematic or pathological gambling behaviour can first carry out a free self-test at ‘check-dein-spiel.de’.

In addition, the free BZgA telephone counselling service on gambling addiction is available on the free service number 0800 1 3727 00. Counselling hours are from Monday to Thursday from 10 am to 10 pm and at weekends from 10 am to 6 pm.

AGA: Every third US citizen actively gambles in casinos

The US Gambling Association estimates that just under 30% of adults in the United States actively gamble in casinos, i.e. also wager money. Another not insignificant proportion of casino guests only visit the gaming facilities to take advantage of the entertainment on offer or the catering facilities. The so-called ‘Indian casinos’ alone take in over USD 40 billion per year in the USA.

Overall, the AGA's surveys revealed that 55% of US citizens have taken part in gambling at least once in the past year. This also includes online offers, lotteries and other forms of gambling. In the USA, the acceptance of gambling among the population is significantly higher than in Europe. For example, 88% of US citizens find gambling acceptable for themselves or others.

The fact that the average age of visitors to casinos is getting lower and lower is also impressive. In 2019, the average age was 49.6 years. In comparison, the average casino guest in 2023 was just under 42 years old.
