More and more high rollers in Macau casinos
In the gambling metropolis of Macau, there are obviously more and more high rollers in the land-based casinos. Such financially strong players are particularly popular both in the local gaming facilities and in the online casinos, as they generate high turnover for the operators. But how many high rollers are there currently in Macau and when do they count as such?
The financial institution Citigroup has determined that 228 high rollers have visited a casino in Macau so far this year. According to the analysis, you are considered a high roller if you place bets totalling at least HKD 100,000 during a casino visit. This is equivalent to around 11,500 euros. Several years ago, we reported on GambleJoe about a Scottish high roller who sued Ladbrokes for £3.3 million.
Tip: In our GambleJoe lexicon, we explain a three-digit number of gambling-related terms. Among them is the term high roller.
Macau: More high rollers in 2024 than in the whole of 2023
According to the financial institution Citigroup, a total of 228 high rollers, also known as whales, visited a casino in Macau in the first three quarters of this year. The number was lower in the entire previous year 2023. According to Citigroup, the total stake of the 228 high rollers this year was HKD 43.3 million, which is equivalent to around 5 million euros.
By comparison, the total turnover of high rollers in 2023 as a whole was ‘only’ HKD 39.7 million (= €4.66 million). Here, each high roller wagered an average of HKD 655,000. This year, the figure was already HKD 655,000 per high roller.
However, according to Citigroup, it is not only the number of high rollers that has recently developed favourably. In August of this year alone, 613 so-called premium players were counted in the casinos in Macau. These are players who wager at least 20,000 HKD (= approx. 2,350 euros).
More high rollers despite a weak economy
Although economic performance in China is weakening, the number of high rollers is developing favourably. This shows that wealthy casino guests are still able to spend a lot of money on leisure activities. Just a few weeks ago, we at GambleJoe reported on the fight against illegal money changers in Macau casinos.
High rollers in online casinos
High rollers who are in a good financial position are of course always welcome in online casinos. For this reason, many online casinos specifically advertise with promotions for high rollers. Several years ago, we at GambleJoe asked ourselves whether a VIP club in an online casino is worthwhile.
In German online casinos, there is generally no targeted marketing aimed at high rollers. This is due to the fact that legal online casinos in this country generally have a deposit limit of 1,000 euros per player per month across all providers. However, if you have a correspondingly high income, you can apply to increase the limit. Nevertheless, online casinos are not really attractive for many high rollers, as there is also a betting limit of 1 euro per game round.
