Eurojackpot continues to grow due to Greece's accession
The Eurojackpot is the biggest lottery in Europe. Top prizes of up to 120 million euros are regularly played out here. Now the community of participating nations and lottery companies continues to grow: Greece was recently accepted as the 19th member.
As recently announced in a press release, Greece has now also joined the ranks of Eurojackpot countries. On 8 March, the Greeks were able to take part in the lottery for the first time and secure their chance to win up to 120 million.
The Eurojackpot has been around since 2012, when the joint project started with seven countries. Nobody would have guessed that it would one day become 19 members. Andreas Kötter, Managing Director of WestLotto and Eurojackpot Chairman, is all the more proud of the development:
"In 2012, we started with seven nations. The fact that we have almost tripled the number to date and that people in all of these countries can dream of winning the jackpot is proof of this: The Eurojackpot is a unique piece of European cooperation."
Greek lottery company OPAP now part of a total of 34 associations
The last addition to the Eurojackpot before Greece was Poland. It was added to the group of participating nations in 2017. Germany has been involved since the very beginning. All 16 companies of the German Lotto and Totoblock (DLTB) are considered founding members. The latter also include the companies in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands and Slovenia. The Eurojackpot is also available in Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden. With the Greek lottery company OPAP, the 34th association has now been added.
The Managing Director of WestLotto and Eurojackpot Chairman Andreas Kötter is very pleased about this. However, he also says in the press release that it is a challenge to bring together the different lottery cultures and legal regulations of the individual Eurojackpot countries:
"What unites us all: as state-licensed lottery companies, we make indispensable contributions to promoting the common good in Europe, which would not be possible in this way without Eurojackpot. Our cooperation is also a strong sign that European cooperation can be a win-win situation for everyone."
The strings are pulled in Münster and Copenhagen
One of the Eurojackpot headquarters is located in Münster, Westphalia. As Germany's largest state lottery, WestLotto, which is based there, is the patron. According to the press release, this is where all the threads for the major European project come together. The second centre is Copenhagen, where the picks from the participating countries are evaluated.
All in all, 325 million people can take part in the lottery. And this is how it works:
- If you want to take part in the Eurojackpot, you have to tick seven numbers on the ticket.
- You have to select 5 out of 50 possible numbers in field A and 2 out of 12 Euro numbers in field B.
- There is always at least 10 million euros in the jackpot - the maximum is 120 million euros.
- The prizes are awarded in a total of 12 different categories - from five correct numbers + two correct numbers to two correct numbers + one correct number.
- The chance of winning the main prize is 1:140 million, which corresponds to the same probability of LOTTO 6aus49.
- The draws take place twice a week: Tuesday and Friday.
- If you wish, you can also take part in the Eurojackpot via a quick pick with the help of a random number generator.
