EuroJackpot: 120 million won in Schleswig-Holstein
In the past, the EuroJackpot in Germany has been a record-breaker. In June of this year, the previous record was set. A single tipper or a lottery syndicate from Schleswig-Holstein can be happy about the huge sum of €120 million.
The lottery is a relatively simple and popular game of chance. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, lotteries and their winners regularly make the headlines: The stories range from the odd, such as a lottery payout gone wrong, to the almost tragic, such as the case of England's youngest lottery millionaire.
Now the game is writing a new story: at the end of June 2023 there was a German record prize of 120 million euros. NordwestLotto spokesman Florian Blömer said that the ticket in question was submitted in the centre of Schleswig-Holstein. The stake was only ten euros, indicating that there was only one winner. In the case of a lottery syndicate, the amount would probably have been higher.
How the win came about
The EuroJackpot has not been hit since the beginning of May 2023 and has been growing steadily. The last time it was hit 13.7 million euros changed hands. This time the lucky winner was from Poland. In fact, breaks in the EuroJackpot are not that rare. The longest break was between September and November of the same year. It took 17 draws before the corresponding grand prize finally went to Berlin.
The previous record lottery win for Germany was set by a ticket from Schleswig-Holstein. The first EuroJackpot in the top prize category was won by a Berliner. The jackpot was won in November 2022. It is not possible to win more than 120 million in this lottery.
But other players or lottery syndicates also won big: 22 million euros were collected in the second prize category. The lucky lottery fans who got it right come from Baden-Württemberg, Hamburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. They have to share the prize money. When shared, this means exactly 2,275,342.20 Euros for each player or group, Westlotto officially announced. There is no concrete information on whether it is individuals or betting associations.
How does a jackpot like this happen?
Such a large sum is created when none of the EuroJackpot participants has correctly selected the drawn numbers 5 out of 50 plus the Euro numbers (additional numbers in the 2 out of 12 system). In each draw the undistributed money from the first prize category is added to the jackpot. The jackpot will be played again in the following draw. The lottery is organised by Westlotto, but the draws take place in Helsinki. The odds of winning the EuroJackpot are 1 in 140 million.
The EuroJackpot lottery covers 18 participating countries. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the game, a number of rule changes have been decided for the end of March 2022. The following two changes will affect the chances of winning:
- Firstly, in addition to the familiar Friday draw, a Tuesday draw has been added. This will allow the main prize to rise more quickly.
- And then the cap was raised from €90 million to €120 million, which should make the lottery more attractive in general.
