According to Statista, online casinos are expected to generate a turnover of 34 billion euros worldwide in 2024. No wonder that such large sums of money also attract fraudsters. Players should therefore make sure that they only play in reputable online casinos with a valid licence. The current casino blacklist shows which providers should be avoided.

There are many different reasons why gambling fans visit illegal online casinos. For example, many gamblers long to be able to play online slots without strict player protection measures. The desire for the most attractive average payout ratio (RTP) is also usually great. It was only in February of this year that we published an article on this very topic at GambleJoe and showed why players are active in online casinos without a licence.

Which online casinos should players stay away from?

To find out which online casinos are legal, it is usually sufficient to take a look at the official gambling whitelist. This is maintained and constantly updated by the Joint Gambling Authority of the Federal States (GGL). If you want to play in an online casino or place sports bets online, you can find an overview of legal gambling providers here.

On the other hand, all online casinos that do not have a German GGL licence are illegal. Anyone who plays with such an illegal provider risks, in the worst case, criminal charges for involvement in unauthorised gambling (§285 StGB). In the event of a conviction, the player then faces a prison sentence of up to six months or a fine of up to one hundred and eighty daily rates.

The problem: To make matters worse, illegal online casinos often use fake slots. Furthermore, players here often facilitate criminal activities and, in the worst case, support the mafia or other parts of organised crime. Such dubious providers also often refuse to pay out without justification and players have to accept unclear or excessively strict bonus terms and conditions.

Of course, it is also true that not everything is "perfect" in legal online casinos. Here, too, there are a number of arguments against, such as the annoying minimum playing time of five seconds, the autospin ban or the slightly lower average payout ratio. Just a fortnight ago, we asked ourselves in an article what is most lacking in German online casinos.

We at GambleJoe have compiled a blacklist of online casinos for our community. In this casino blacklist, you will also find the reason why we do not recommend the respective provider.

Note: Our Community Casino Blacklist is now also well-filled. Here, our GJ members complain about the lack of a gambling licence, non-existent operator information or the use of fake slots, among other things.

Data protection rarely an issue at dubious online casinos

Experience has shown that providers on the blacklist of online casinos attach little importance to data security or data protection. In some cases, players find inadequate data protection guidelines at best and do not even realise that the data transfer is not encrypted. This neglect poses a considerable security risk for players and their data. For this reason, it is essential to use whitelisted online casinos.

Conclusion

There are significantly more illegal online casinos on the German online gambling market than legal online casinos with a German licence. Interested gambling enthusiasts should therefore be sure to check the official whitelist of the authorities before registering to determine whether the virtual casino of choice actually provides an offer that is authorised in Germany. This is the only way to ensure that the player is not threatened with criminal prosecution and that they are travelling in a safe and reputable gaming environment.
