After a long back and forth, the bill to legalise casinos in Brazil was finally approved this summer. Now the plans of investors and other stakeholders are entering the hot phase. According to recent studies, the gambling industry in Brazil could create several hundred thousand jobs. But is this figure really realistic?

It has finally been decided: Brazil is opening up to the gambling market and legalising it. The plan is for several gigantic casino resorts to be built in the country, which should bring major benefits for tourism in particular. According to current surveys, the total investment per casino resort is expected to be between 200 and 800 million reals. Converted, this corresponds to an amount of between 36.4 and 145.4 million euros per casino. This takes into account not only the costs for the casino construction, but also the costs for the construction of a hotel and a congress centre.

Gambling industry in Brazil to create hundreds of thousands of jobs

It is interesting to note that it is calculated that each casino will create between 3,000 and 8,000 direct jobs. Considering the gigantic size of Brazil, a total of between 81,000 and 216,000 direct jobs could be created in the gambling industry throughout the country.

Of course, this primarily includes employees who work directly in the casino, for example as croupiers or reception staff. In addition, there are several thousand employees in catering and customer service as well as thousands of employees who have to take care of security in the casino. Finally, technicians and the entire events team are also part of the workforce required for a modern casino resort.

With around 214 million inhabitants, Brazil is the seventh largest country in the world and, with an area of over 8.5 million square kilometres, the fifth largest country in the world. The official language in Brazil is Portuguese and the currency used is the real (BRL). The Brazilian government hopes that the legalisation of casinos will have a positive effect on tourism.

In addition to direct jobs, a casino resort also creates many other indirect jobs. This means that between 5,000 and 10,000 additional jobs could be created per casino resort. In total, this means that between 135,000 and 270,000 indirect jobs could be created in the country as a whole as a result of casino resorts. The category of ‘indirect jobs’ includes, for example, cleaning staff, local suppliers and the furniture and decoration industry, which of course have to make a casino resort look nice.

In total, it is estimated that around 350,000 direct and indirect jobs could be created through the legalisation of casinos in Brazil.

Back in December last year, we at GambleJoe reported that a tax rate of 12% on betting and casinos had been decided in Brazil.
