Bad Wiessee casino with double-digit million turnover
Spielbank Bad Wiessee am Tegernsee generated gross gaming revenue of almost 38 million euros last year. Compared to 2022, this represents an increase of over 13 per cent. But why is it that the casino on the idyllic Tegernsee, which is located around 50 kilometres south of Munich in the Bavarian Alps, was able to achieve such an impressive result?
There are currently nine casinos in Bavaria. In addition to the casino in Bad Wiessee on Lake Tegernsee, there are casinos in Feuchtwangen, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Lindau, Bad Kissingen, Bad Füssing, Bad Reichenhall, Bad Kötzting and Bad Steben. The Tegernsee casino near Munich was particularly successful last year. Here alone, gross gaming revenue (GGR) in 2023 was an impressive €37.995 million.
"People feel they are in good and safe hands with us".
In 2022, the Bad Wiessee casino has almost completely recovered from the effects of the global coronavirus pandemic. We at GambleJoe reported back in March that several million Euros had been gambled away at Tegernsee near Munich. And last year, in 2023, the success story seems to have continued.
- Gross gaming revenue 2022: €33.5 million
- Gross gaming revenue 2023: €37.995 million
- Increase: + 13.37%
Casino director Margit Hirsch (56) explains the impressive increase in turnover as follows
"People appreciate reputable gambling and feel that they are in good and safe hands with us."
Small games account for a high proportion of gross gaming revenue As in the vast majority of other casinos, slot machines, i.e. small games, are the most important source of revenue in Bad Wiessee. Almost 80 % of gross gaming revenue at the Bad Wiessee location was attributable to small games last year. Accordingly, the remaining 20 % was attributable to large games. At the casino on Lake Tegernsee, this includes two roulette tables as well as blackjack and poker.
It should not go unmentioned at this point that the casino levy is currently the largest source of income for the municipality of Bad Wiessee. Last year, the small municipality with its population of just over 5,000 took in an impressive 5.699 million euros from the casino levy alone.
Nearly a quarter more casino guests at Tegernsee
It is particularly impressive that the number of visitors to the Bad Wiessee casino has increased by 23.5% in the space of a year. While 127,969 guests visited the casino at Lake Tegernsee in 2022, this figure rose to 158,100 in 2023.
As the Bad Wiessee casino had around a quarter more guests, but this 'only' led to an increase in gross gaming revenue of just over 13%, it can be concluded that each guest wagered less money on average.
All nine casinos in Bavaria (see list above) generated gross gaming revenue of just over €124 million. This means that, on average, each location should have generated just under €14 million. At the Bad Wiessee site, the figure was almost three times as high at just under €38 million.
The reason for the high turnover in Tegernsee is that the casino is located in the catchment area of Munich and that it is a holiday region. Back in August last year, we at GambleJoe reported that players in Bavaria were once again heading to the casino.
