Over USD 1.5 billion: Lotto jackpot hit in the USA

Almost three weeks ago, the legendary Mega Millions jackpot was won in the USA. A player from Florida won a record-breaking sum of over US$1.5 billion. But has the lucky player already cashed in his winning ticket and what numbers did he hit to win the billion dollar jackpot?

It was less than a year ago that we at GambleJoe reported on the cracked $2 billion Powerball jackpot. At the beginning of August, a player from Florida hit a similar jackpot. In one fell swoop, the US player became US$1.55 billion richer. This is the equivalent of just over €1.4 billion. The huge jackpot was won in the US multi-state Mega Millions lottery.

Which winning numbers led to the jackpot win?

According to the lottery, the winner is from the US state of Florida and has already cashed in his winning ticket. No further details about the player have been released. The correct numbers were 13, 19, 20, 32 and 33, plus the golden Mega Ball number 14. The current billion dollar jackpot is the largest prize in the history of the Mega Millions lottery. Just a few weeks ago, we at GambleJoe reported that a passenger hit the jackpot on the machine while waiting for a flight.

However, the lucky Mega Millions lottery passenger now has to decide if he wants his winnings paid out right away or if he wants to take the instalment option. If he opts for the full payout, the prize will be halved to 'only' just over USD 780 million. Alternatively, he can have the winnings paid out in monthly instalments over the next 30 years.

1 billion winner and 7 million winner

As well as the lucky Florida player who won over US$1.5 billion in one fell swoop, there were seven other million dollar winners in the same draw at the beginning of August. Given that each of them won at least US$1 million, they probably had reason to be happy too. In Europe, lottery winnings tend to be much smaller. In July this year, for example, we reported a EuroJackpot win of 120 million.

Unfortunately, players in Germany cannot participate in the US Powerball or Mega Millions lotteries. The chances of winning the Mega Millions lottery have been reduced to 1 in 300 million since the new rules came into effect.
