Are online casinos at risk from AI fraud?
There is no doubt that artificial intelligence (AI) can bring many advantages, and not just in everyday life. However, the disadvantages of this branch of computer science are often neglected. For example, the online gambling industry is also concerned with protecting itself and other players from AI-supported fraud. But to what extent are online casinos at risk in this respect?
Over the past few years, we at GambleJoe have already reported several times on artificial intelligence in the context of the gambling industry. For example, in an article published in December 2020, we discussed how AI can increase the willingness to take risks when gambling. However, AI is now also being used more frequently to gain unfair advantages in online casinos. The misuse of AI could therefore jeopardise the integrity of the entire online gambling industry.
How does artificial intelligence jeopardise online casinos?
Automated bots and so-called prediction algorithms are currently two of the biggest sources of danger for online casino operators. The advantage of bots is that human behaviour can be imitated without the typical limitations associated with it. As a result, automated bots can play non-stop, quickly recognise patterns and then exploit the vulnerabilities of the respective software. This gives users an unfair advantage over traditional human players. This advantage is particularly effective in roulette.
The prediction algorithms analyse extremely large amounts of data from the past in order to identify trends and patterns. This AI-supported form of cheating is particularly attractive in poker, for example. Here, the algorithm can constantly calculate the perfect gaming strategy without being guided by emotions.
How do online casinos protect themselves against AI-supported cheating?
Online casinos are increasingly using so-called behavioural analyses to find out whether the gambling behaviour shown is of a human nature or not. As soon as unusual patterns are recognised, the case is reviewed individually or the ‘user’ is excluded from the game.
In this context, online casinos are also increasingly working with security experts and are keeping a particularly close eye on machine learning or anomaly detection. The aim, of course, is to maintain the integrity of the game in order to give every player equal and, above all, fair chances of winning.
Just over a year ago, we asked ourselves in an article whether ChatGPT could help in the online casino. In this context, we asked the programme a few questions on a test basis, which were largely answered satisfactorily.
The fact is, however, that the average online casino player cannot yet benefit from artificial intelligence. However, the AI self-test for recognising gaming problems, which we reported on at GambleJoe in November last year, could be an exception.
