187 new lotto millionaires in Germany in 2022

Week after week lotto players in Germany dream of clearing the jackpot and becoming millionaires. In the past year, 187 players from Germany managed to win at least a million Euro each. During the previous year the number of winners winning millions was a bit less. But which winning number was the most drawn in the classic “6 from 49” in 2022?

In Summer 2021 we had reported that the lotto boom in Germany persists. The lotto classic “6 from 49” was popular even during the crisis period. During difficult times the players had a great wish to win millions. A few days ago, the lotto figures for the past year were published. These show that there were nearly 200 new lotto millionaires in 2022.

In 2022 there were nearly 187 new lotto millionaires

The German Lotto and Pools has stated that 187 people won at least a million Euro. A player from Berlin carried away the record amount of 120 million Euro in the Eurojackpot. As a comparison: The year before there were 181 lottery winners who had won millions.

However, that is not enough: Across Germany there were 1200 players who won at least 100,000 Euro in the lotteries of the respective state lottery companies. In 2021 there were “only” 992 lotto players who won a minimum of 100,000 Euro. In Autumn 2021 we had reported about an impressive lotto win of around 50 million Euro in Australia.

Many lotto winners come from North Rhein Westphalia

The analysis of the winning statistics shows that the German state of North Rhein Westphalia had the highest number of lottery winners. No wonder: This is the most populated region in Germany with nearly 18 million inhabitants. During the past year, 45 of the new lotto millionaires had a registered address in North Rhein Westphalia. 31 lotto winners who won millions in 2022 had a registered address in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. A further 15 lotto millionaires came from Lower Saxony. 

Axel Holthaus, managing director of the pool partners Lotto Niedersachsen, was very satisfied with developments in 2022. During a a press release he stated:

“In spite of the economic and geopolitical situation, the Germans have also tried their luck in 2022. We forked out 3.9 billion Euro in winnings from all types of games and made players all over Germany happy.” 

6 from 49: Which winning number was drawn the most often?

In 2022 the winning number 49 was drawn the most often in the lotto classic “6 from 49”. It was followed by the numbers 1 and 16 in the second and third place respectively. However here one should note that the probability of winning in the lotto is of course exceptionally low. In the classic “6 from 49” the probability of winning the “6 Richtige” and “Superzahl” is 1 to 140 million according to Lotto.de.

The probability of getting six numbers right is around 1 to 15.5 million. With 6 right without the super number the probability lies at around 1 to 60,000. We had reported about an example from Great Britain which shows that winning millions does not necessarily mean that the lucky devil will enjoy a life of luxury. Years later the lotto millionaire is still living in her social accomodation.

Conclusion

In the past year there were 187 new lotto millionaires. The state had also played a part in the developments which were done in the lotto business. In 2022 the national budget cashed in 3.18 billion Euro in taxes and duties. We are excited to see if in 2023 there will be more lotto millionaires than in 2022!
