So I've heard some good suggestions, but my personal tendency would be to donate something to a cause where something will happen or be made available immediately and effectively, be it food for the homeless/ toys or similar for children/animal shelter etc..
Instead of large, yet well-intentioned or thought-out goals, which however require time and significantly more financial resources to make a difference.
