App developers have endured Apple and Google cutting 30% of revenue for a decade, Okay, I would just completely ignore Apple as a vendor, but from an economic standpoint...just tack on the extra cost.
Netflix customers can then pick and choose the rest. Netflix is the latest company to test a model to avoid the fees associated with App Store distribution, but it's far from alone.

Okay, what exactly is this about now?
Well, I don't know anything about Apple...is just way too much overpriced for me.
Cell phone I have e.g. always Androit.
I heard today in a documentary that the app store in NY makes a million dollars a day!
And Netflix I do not look, but I have Amazon Prime...when I have some time for a movie.
Ps. Kinda Strange, sign up here specifically to write this post?

@gigablue:
It's true that the model that the app stores put on the day is hopelessly overpriced, this also applies to platforms like Steam.
30% and more of the sales price (not of the win!) are a bad board and I'm just surprised that so many app/game developers have gone along with it for so long - on the other hand, you have to get an app/game onto the device first if it doesn't come from the app stores.
Okay, I would just ignore Apple as a Provider completely
In the US, Apple has 46% of the market - no developer in their right mind would voluntarily give up that many potential customers.

Haha, maybe this is meaningless, just to express my personal opinion. I saw this news recently, just want to share it. As I am also Apple user, I can't understand the 30% fee charged by Apple.

For me as a musician, I can say that I'm totally okay with the 30% and I think other people who create content and offer it for sale feel the same way.
Short history: I have produced 3-4 years ago with 2 buddies a small album itself and released out of pure fun on all platforms. So Apple, Google, Spotify etc. etc..
We paid a fee to a "label", but this was to be paid annually and amounted to about 20 €. In return, we were allowed to keep all the income. We were relatively clear at the time that we would still make a loss, but what the heck, the main thing is music on Spotify!
You can say that we earned about 70ct per song sold on Google or ITunes. On Spotify, of course, it was much less, even though the number of streams ended up being five figures. We didn't sell very much with this album, but we had the 20€ back in it and everyone still earned a little from it. The whole WITHOUT:
- Serious music label
- Promotion
- GEMA
I don't think 30% is too much for them to provide the platform. There are always great artists who do not agree with this and therefore take their music from this market. The result is that the market now decides who is successful. If Taylor Swift's music doesn't appear on Spotify because she thinks she earns too little, she earns even less. Even if she keeps 100% of the revenue on her own platform. That's just how it works now.
I also sell my instrumentals on a platform that keeps almost half of the price. In addition, I still have to take care of taxes, etc. myself. But I sell mainly abroad, USA, Canada or France. The end consumers would not find me at all without such large-scale platforms, because they are mostly amateurs who also pay their beats out of their own pockets
Personally, I'm glad that there are platforms that every artist can use. No matter if you produce a series, write a song or a book
