Gambling addiction in general: Get out of debt / Get out of addiction - My diary

Hello fellow sufferers!

Short and sweet my story: I am highly addicted to gambling and now have about 50,000 € in debt. The debts are largely due to the Gambling addiction, because I have gambled away my money online at the beginning of the month instead of paying my bills.

At some point I took out a loan to pay off the debts. Problem faded out, sweat wiped off. Once again well gone.... But the addiction wouldn't let me go, which meant that I soon increased my credit and later took out another one

There I was then at a point where I said to myself: "So! That's it now! You'll barely have any money for the next 8 years, but it's enough to live on and pay off debt. This is the last chance, from now on never gamble again!"

The whole thing went well for about 2 months and then it grabbed me out of the blue. "Well, once 50 euros do not kill me. Maybe I'll be lucky and I'll be able to increase my budget a bit... But really only 50 euros, not a cent more..."

Guess what? It did not remain naturally with the 50 euro but it went again everything in. For months. Credit installments could not be served. That was from this time also my play motive: Ok, if the next wage is there I transfer the outstanding credit installment of the last month. The current installment I do not transfer yet, but first try to increase the money in the online casino to reverse my loss

I don't need to explain further that this went very wrong and every normal thinking person just shakes his head. Who is addicted himself, or deals with the subject knows this behavior but. Typical for addicted gamers.

As a result of the ever-growing quagmire, first my bank canceled all my accounts, then lender No. 1 and now No. 2. Court orders are piling up and lender No. 1 has already announced itself with wage garnishment at the employer.

Now I am FINALLY taking the step to Debt counseling tomorrow and hope to get out of this mess. Also an addiction therapy is in the eye. This step I would actually have had to go much much earlier and would probably have saved me some debt and nerves

But unfortunately you have to get out of your comfort zone and really face problems. It is easier to push problems in front of you. You look for short-term solutions and get yourself some time again, but it does nothing

This thread is supposed to be something like my personal "Get out of debt - Get out of addiction diary", where everybody can write his opinion. It should also serve others who are in a similar situation. From my own experience, I know that some people who are in a similar situation as me are looking for advice, or have absolutely no idea what the way out of the misery looks like, what steps you have to take and what is coming up. This thread, which is constantly kept up to date, is also intended to encourage and perhaps also prevent you from waiting as long as I did.

My first update will probably be the day after tomorrow. In it I will then report on my appointment with the debt counseling.

Until then I am looking forward to all kinds of answers.

Even if it is morally reprehensible, get a lawyer, say that you have been gambling and simply have the bookings of the last 13 months reversed. For that amount it is worth it, even if everyone talks about morality - in the end your own life is worth more than the hard pull of moral values against casinos.

Talk about it explicitly and you have good chances and at the same time get help from a psychologist so that you don't gamble it away again. I wish you all the best and hope that you get out of the Debt counseling with a good feeling.

Hi Anchor

I have made most of my payments via Sofortüberweisung. EU-regulated gambling is still a gray area in DE and in the actual sense there should be nothing to get, because the casino will claim that a service was provided

Since you can not simply charge back transfers like direct debits, the chances are not good in my opinion. The casino will not voluntarily reverse the amounts and legally has a longer breath.

The payment service Provider is also difficult to prosecute. This is only as an intermediary, the money from A to B transfers. Even if the payment service provider has participated in illegal gambling as defined by the German Gambling Ordinance, it will not charge back the amounts as long as the casino does not release the amounts

These payment providers also have very good lawyers and sit at a much longer lever. A normal person with a lawyer and an amount in dispute of 10,000 or 20,000 probably won't get very far.

correct. the back posting does not work with transfers like SOFORT or Trustly. no chance.

up to the paragraph where you mention that judicial notices are already piling up and wage garnishment is threatening, it all seems very familiar to me ^^
even if the following Tip could be a little asi, it is possibly a small possibility.
make sure that you always pay rent, electricity and other essential things.
the rest, i.e. bank loans, first talk to the creditors, so that you possibly pay smaller installments. if they refuse, take your chances.
the banks get a title, send a bailiff. if you don't have exorbitant luxury goods at home, he will leave quickly.
garnishment of wages is also not a death sentence. currently, the basic amount that cannot be garnished is 1073.88 euros.
that means they HAVE to leave you this amount. so it's not like you'll slip to hartz level or worse.
also talk to your employer and tell him how things are. openness is important. tell him that you are doing Debt counseling and also want to do addiction therapy.
no gambling addict gambles for pleasure. in most cases there are psychological causes. a reasonably socially competent employer should be able to interpret this situation correctly.

Whether you should really tell your employer? Perhaps, if there is a friendly relationship. How many employers have above-average social skills?

Since a bank has already announced wage garnishment, the boss already knows. We have a very good relationship, as it is a small family business. I have been working there for 13 years.

He doesn't know that I am a gambling addict or where the debts come from, but I told him that I will most likely go into private insolvency. He was understanding and offered me support.

As for the negotiations with the creditors, it remains to be seen. Since the notices are already available, the negotiations will be taken over by my Debt advisor, with whom I have an appointment today.

He will then make out-of-court settlement offers. If these are not accepted (which is to be assumed), an application for PI will be filed.

I don't know how much you earn and what your monthly income is, but maybe it would be a good idea to take out another loan and pay off all your debts, maybe it would really be your last option, even if by 300 monthly repayments or more, you won't have sooo much financial resources in the future...

No chance! My monthly earnings are just over 1500 euros. My previous installments are a total of just under 500 euros. A summary Debt restructuring with possibly smaller installment is not possible, because hardly a "serious" bank gives a loan with more than 10 years term

Apart from that I have a rabenschwarze Schufa, ds I have already made so many credit inquiries in the past and also by the terminations Schufa entries have

Have you ever looked into a "future loan"? Vllt this would be an option, it is extra for rescheduling there.
If you have the other repaid by the new loan, then you can use the 500 € for the new loan?

Everything under 25000-50000 do not make a private insolvency, otherwise I advise a private insolvency. Unless you want to pay off 500 years, after 6 years biste free.
