Macao
Macau is a special administrative region of the People's Republic of China, located about 50 kilometers from Hong Kong. The city is currently home to around 650,000 inhabitants and the main sources of income are primarily gambling and the associated tourism. Within just a few years, the number of tourists increased from eight million in 2000 to nearly 30 million in 2013, and already in 2013, land-based casinos in Macau generated six times as much revenue as gaming venues in Las Vegas. Most recently, more than 35 million people came to Macau as tourists in 2018. Macau's popularity as a gambling capital is largely due to the fact that gambling is illegal in mainland China - but not in Macau.
